Self Storage and Moving Tips: Smaller Boxes Make Better Sense
If you’re like most people who are moving, you grab a few big boxes, fill them up with all sorts of things and get them ready for transport to either your new place or a self storage facility. But did you know smaller boxes may make better sense?
It is true. Most people think a few big boxes would be ideal to get everything packed up quickly, but big boxes come with big problems! Here are some moving tips, specifically as it relates to selecting the right box size for your move.
1- Big boxes get heavy really fast. Most folks don’t really consider weight when packing large boxes, but obviously the more things you put in there, the heavier the box becomes. Loading the box all the way to the top may look like an ideal use of the box, but in reality you have just created a lifting nightmare. Half the time, folks who pack large boxes to the rim find themselves opening up the boxes to empty out a few items, lightening the load enough to be able to lift the box.
2- Big boxes are often unstable. This is a simple rule of physics… the more surface area you have, the more support it needs to hold a weight. Sort of like a longer bridge requiring several pillars to hold it up as opposed to a shorter bridge. This means when stacking boxes, larger ones tend to collapse more easily under the weight of other boxes, making for unstable stacks that cold end up falling and inuring someone.
3- Big boxes are harder to organize. When packing a large box, it becomes harder and harder to categorize its contents to something very specific. That’s because you can not only fit all the kitchen utensils in there, but a bunch of other non-related items such as the DVD player, decorative statuettes from the entertainment center, a few pillows and even a vase. You feel obligated to fill up the box so tend to go overboard with random items just to get the job done. This makes unpacking difficult as too many unrelated items often surface, causing a great deal of stress!
4- Finding things becomes impossible. Per the item above, if you were to go into your self storage locker in search of that vital document, not only do you find yourself moving away a few large and heavy boxes out of the way before you get to the box you’re looking for, but when you actually open the box, you find it very hard to reach all the way to bottom without first having to empty out the entire content. And when you do finally find that magical piece of paper you were looking for, you’re face with packing everything in there again, leading to lots of wasted time.
For these reasons and a few others, we find it is almost always better to use more smaller boxes to not only help with lifting, but with stability, ease of organization and ease of finding what you need quickly. Plus by packing small, you are now increasing the number of people that can help with the move! No longer will the move be reserved for the big guys with all the muscle, but even grandma can get involved taking out a few small boxes to the truck!
