Self Storage in Placentia and San Bernardino: More Moving Tips and Packing Tips from our Experts
With two self storage locations in Placentia and San Bernardino, our customers often ask us to provide them with some packing tips and moving tips that would help make their move easier. So we’ve decided to do our best and provide you simple moving and packing tips that can make a huge difference in the long run!
Ever tried looking for an item in your self storage unit only to have to pull everything out, open every box, shuffle through all sorts of random things just to get to what you were looking for? Here are a few very simple but often ignored packing tips for the amateur mover.
When beginning to pack, make sure to use smaller boxes versus larger ones. Sure, initially you may be tempted to just dump everything in one big box and get it over with, but remember that those very boxes need to be carried, moved, and unpacked one day, and having too many random items all bunched together makes for very challenging and frustrating unpacking, not to mention unnecessary weight that can quickly exhaust you during the move.
Make sure to pack things systematically and in a way that organizes similar things together. True that in our homes sometimes we forget organization and start throwing everything into one closet, drawer or garage, but when moving, it is best to organize before you pack, making sure you don’t take the same mess with you. This way, all your kitchen utensils are in one box, decorative things in another, linens in another, and tools in another.
Before closing and sealing the boxes, make sure to write the contents of each box on one of its sides. Keeping the box open during this process not only helps in case you happen to run into another item later on that needs to be included in that box, but helps you double check the contents just to make sure you didn’t miss anything when itemizing before sealing the box for good.
Finally, label all remaining panels of the box (sides, top, bottom) with a more general headline. For example write “kitchen” or “bathroom stuff” in extra large letters that is easily visible – sort of like a newspaper headline, letting you know in one glance what category the box belong to. You may end up with 6 boxes for “bathroom stuff” with each box having their own unique bulleted list of items inside, helping you pin-point your electric toothbrush when the time comes.
Finally, when unloading the truck and putting thing in storage, make sure to keep all categorized boxes together, with larger, heavier ones going on the bottom, and lighter, smaller boxes on top. By leaving a small isle in the middle of the storage unit – dividing the pile of boxes in two – you’re giving yourself greater freedom to scour through your stuff at a later time, making finding the box you were looking for even easier since you now have a pathway carved right into the heart of the pile!
